On June 1st, 2025’s bright morning of colours, the Consulate of Italy, Bengaluru received diplomats, dignitaries, artists, businesswomen and men, and Italy’s friends for the celebration of Festa della Repubblica – Italian National Day. The event was held at Bastian, in the city of Bengaluru, and it was not just a national festivity but also a reaffirmation of the fantastic and growing relationship between Italy and South India.

A Daytime Celebration of Culture and Friendship
Beneath the bright summer sun in Bengaluru, the event was a meeting of cultures. Italian and Indian flags waved high as the guests were welcomed with warm hospitality, a display of Italian delicacies, fresh espresso, and chilled Prosecco.
Tables were adorned with Italian handcrafted items, and the atmosphere was befitting of the beauty and warmth associated with both Italian elegance and Indian hospitality. Celebrations encompassed visual presentations of Italian innovation and design, and engagement that bridged communities across various backgrounds.
This event was special in its energy, having followed a series of initiatives that have had a significant reach in terms of Italy’s outreach in southern India.

Consul General Alfonso Tagliaferri
The day’s keynote address was delivered by Consul General Alfonso Tagliaferri, whose name had become synonymous with Italy’s growing diplomatic and cultural presence in South India.
He was born in Rome on 1 July 1979, and comes from a background as multifaceted as the cities he has lived in. Having graduated in Law from L.U.I.S.S. Guido Carli University of Rome in 2004, he began his journalistic career as a correspondent for agencies like AdnKronos and ANSA in Rome and Santiago, Chile. Those were the years that taught him to communicate and be open-minded towards international thinking.

In 2009, he became a part of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was initially employed in legal affairs and International treaties. His diplomatic postings have ranged from Manila to Cape Town, which has endowed him with an intimate sense of cross-cultural diplomacy.
Mr. Alfonso Tagliaferri was appointed as Italy’s first Consul General in Bengaluru. It has been a mission that has been nothing less than a transformation. Under him, the consulate has launched several high-impact projects, from organising the Italian Screens movie festival to improving industrial and academic ties. He was also key to the opening of the Marposs Tech Centre in Bengaluru and the VFS Global Visa Application Centre, facilitating the journey of citizens of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Pondicherry to Italy. Mr. Alfonso Tagliaferri’s diplomacy is guided by a belief that Italy and India, both ancient cultures with youthful energy.

Italy and India: A Growing Friendship
The National Day was not just a remembrance; it was a celebration of shared values: democracy, creativity, innovation, and community. From research collaboration with Indian universities to expanding commerce and cultural exchanges, the Consulate of Italy in Bengaluru is a bridge of opportunity.
As the guests spoke in the sun, surrounded by images of Italian excellence and Indian largesse, it was clear that this was not so much a celebration of the past, but a plan for the future — a future with cooperation, with communication, with friendship.
